One of the most prominent faces in Urdu literature, Ismat Chughtai was a force to reckon with. Born on August 21, 1915 in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, Chughtai was one of the pillars in Urdu literature and through her writing she constantly shed light on issues like female desires and sexuality, conflicts of the middle class and their aspirations.

One of her most enduring works remain the short story, Lihaaf (The Quilt). Published in 1942, the story sparked controversy and was criticised for its homoerotic theme. However, Lihaaf is one among a large body of her work. Chughtai has enriched the canon of Urdu literaure with her other works as well.

Here’s looking at her famous short stories and novels.

Gainda ( The Marigold)

Written after Chughtai moved to Mumbai, Gainda explores the various facets of female sexuality. She wrote about the awakening of sexual desires and urges in young girls and also brought to the fore the double standard of morality. Gainda is the name of a young widow who is sucked into the adult world prematurely owing a child marriage and the story traces how she falls prey to it and is ultimately shamed and chastised.

Lihaaf (The Quilt)

One of her most controversial works, Lihaaf deals with the theme of homosexuality. A theme more closely guarded then it is now, it was scathingly criticised and charges of obscenity were levelled against Chughtai. Narrated from a child’s perspective, the story shows how the protagonist Begum Jan, neglected by her husband, creates a space for herself in her household and uses that to articulate her sexual desires.

Gharwali (The Homemaker)

Gharwali narrates the tale of Lajjo, the protagonist whom Chughtai invests not only with an awareness of her sexual desires but also with immaculate survival instincts. She feels no shame as Lajjo, a quintessential Chughtai protagonist, treats her sexual urges as a natural instinct. Nothing more and nothing less.

Tedhi Lakeer (The Crooked Line)

Considered one of the most celebrated works in Urdu literature, Tedhi Lakeer is Chughtai’s magnum opus. Her protagonist Shama is rebellious, headstrong and through her, Chughtai presents a picture of the way Indian Muslims would live under the colonial rule. She also wrote about women, their desires and struggles.

Til (The Mole)

The Mole narrates the tale of an artist who wants to paint a village girl, Rani in the hope of winning some money. Rani, however, distracts him with her sexual charm and relentlessly coaxes and pursues him. Chughtai here places women’s sexual desires on equal footing with that of a man.

One of the most celebrated Urdu authors, Ismat Chughtai rarely followed the norm and her stories received a lot of backlash for being iconoclastic. Her popular short story Lihaaf, published in 1942 dealt with the theme of homoerotica for which she had to face ‘obscenity charges’.

The author through her writing shed light on issues like patriarchy, female desires and sexuality, and conflicts of the middle class and their aspirations. Surprisingly, she was not immune to it. Chughtai writes about the same in the book A Life in Words: Memoirs.

Translated by M Asaduddin and published by Penguin, the book sheds light on her growing up years, her conflicts with her mother, her realisation that it was a man’s world, her struggles with getting to know herself and coming to terms with it and an amalgamation of all that made her into the author that she was.

Extract:

“My mother did not like my activities at all. She was worried about my future—‘These manly pursuits do not befit a woman,’ she would say. She had little understanding of my pursuits, and could not explain things to me either. Later I found out why my mother was so anxious. This was a man’s world, she said, made and distorted by man. A woman is a tiny part of this world and man has made her the object of his own love and hatred. Depending on his whims, he worships her or rejects her. To make a place for herself in the world a woman has to resort to feminine wiles. Patience, prudence, wisdom and social graces—these will make a man dependent on a woman. From the start, she’d say, make a boy so dependent on you that he feels embarrassed to sew his own button and would die of shame if he has to prepare his own meal. Do all the small chores that a servant can do, bear with his injustices with quiet self-abasement so he eventually feels remorseful and falls at your feet to ask for forgiveness!

But I had spent my life in the company of my brothers. I was greedy to be like them and even outdo them. I considered femininity a sham, and looked upon compromise as falsehood, patience as cowardice and gratitude as duplicity. I was not in the habit of beating about the bush. Even decking up, wearing gaudy clothes and applying make-up to hide one’s blemishes seemed a kind of deception. ‘No boy will ever fall for such a girl,’ my clever friends warned me. Frightened, I would try to act on their warning, providing a field day for my brothers. There was no place for formality amongst us that would make them hesitate in telling the truth; if I was candid with them they were even more so with me. I became the butt of jokes. ‘Ah, decking up to snare boys!’ Could I dare wear any make- up after that?

Experience has taught me that a woman needs neither light nor heavy make-up. I never had any dearth of friends, and some of these friendships bordered on love. When I met girls in Russia who did not take any interest in cosmetics and wore simple, workman-like clothes, I asked them why they didn’t dress themselves up. ‘Never felt the need! Why, do I look ugly?’ one of them threw back at me. ‘Not really. But you will look even more beautiful [if you wear make-up].’ ‘I would like to offer goods that are genuine.

My own complexion, lips and femininity are good enough,’ she replied with confidence. In Europe too, the younger generation is fed up of cosmetics. To maintain the eternal relationship between man and woman it is enough for a man to be a man and a woman to be a woman. The Russian girls made a deep impression on me. In my stories I have written a great deal about women’s economic subjugation and helplessness. If a girl obeys the men in her family simply because she is economically dependent on them, then it is not obedience but deception. If a wife stays with her husband simply because he is her provider then she’s as helpless as a prostitute.

The children born of such a mother will only display helplessness and a slavish mentality. Such a people would always be dependent on the munificence of developed nations. As long as the women of our country continue to suffer oppression without resistance we will be weighed down by a sense of inferiority in political and economic spheres too.”

Think of Eid and Hyderabadi biryani, korma and sevaiyyan are just some of the delicacies which come to mind. There is something about the charm of generational recipes that marks the festive season. This Eid al-Adha, come meet some home caterers in Delhi who are reviving the traditional flavours of the festival.

Omer Khusro, Iram Caterers

Started by, Mrs Khusro, a homemaker, more as a hobby than a business, Iram Caterers was set up in 2009. The business is now run by her extremely genteel and genial son, Omer Khusro. Speaking to indianexpress.com, Khusro shares the finest dish on his menu and his own personal favourites.

What is your favourite family Eid dish?

Sheer Khurma was a particular favourite of mine, as a child. For spice, I like biryani and korma.

Which is the finest dish on your menu?

Haleem. It is a combination of wheat, boneless mutton and dal. It has a thick consistency and one helping is topped off with brown onions, lemon, chopped ginger and green chili.

What are the non-vegetarian items customers tend to favour during Eid?

Dum ka Keema that has assertive spices and is smoked over lighted coal and ghee is quite favoured. We also have Dahi ke Chops that are made in a bit of gravy and have understated spices. Customers also love Shikampur kebab, mutton and chicken biryani, dum ke pasande.

Do you have any specialities for vegetarian customers during Eid?

Kubuli biryani is one of a kind at Iram. Nobody seems to be doing it in Delhi. It is a smoked biryani from Hyderabad, but instead of vegetables, it has chana dal in it.

Khatti dal with lal masoor and a dollop of fresh tamarind is also particularly admired.

Who inspired you to cook?

My mother.

One ingredient you can’t do without in your kitchen?

Ginger, garlic and spices.

Shibli Anis, Delhi 6

Recipes handed down generations are the essence of this catering business. “We have two types of dishes–one that is cooked by the khaansama whose families have been making traditional dishes for years, and the others made by my mother, sisters and sister-in-law,” says Shibli Anis.

What is your favourite family Eid dish?

My family and I love to sit down to a hot meal of lamb leg on Eid.

Which is the finest dish on the menu?

Shaami kebab, which is a family recipe. Ordinarily, it is made of keema but ours is made of meatballs or botiyan. They are boiled and mixed with chana dal and spices. Then, they are minced together using sil batta and then fried. This gives them a much softer and juicier taste.

What are the non-vegetarian items customers tend to favour during Eid?

Hari Mirch keema. We mince the keema by hands and not machines so it has chunks of meat in it. It has always been popularly eaten in old Delhi during monsoons.

Do you have any specialities for vegetarian customers during Eid?

Dal makhani and paneer butter masala.

Who inspired you to get into food?

My mother is a wonderful chef and she inspired me to get into food. After travelling nationally and internationally, I didn’t find good Mughlai food anywhere apart from my area of old Delhi or house. Then I realised people are not doing justice with Mughlai food and decided to start something of my own.

Sadia Durrani, Nawabi Zayka

After being unable to make it to the Top 50 of MasterChef India, season 2, Sadia Durrani decided to channel her energies into setting up Nawabi Zayka. A mother of two, Sadia uses her mother, grandmother and mother-in-law’s recipes in her menu. Here is what she has to say on Eid food.

What is your favourite family Eid dish?

Shaami kebab, korma, biryani. We would stay up all night and make these dishes for friends and neighbours who would come in great numbers to our place.

What are the non-vegetarian items customers tend to favour during Eid?

On Eid, the speciality is kaleji (liver) as we sacrifice the goat. Shami kebab, hari mirch kebab, nihari, biryani are also popular.

Happy Bakrid, Happy Eid al-Adha 2018 Wishes Images, Quotes, Messages, SMS: Eid al-Adha or the Festival of Sacrifice is celebrated to mark the unshakeable obedience and faith of Ibrahim (Abrahim). A dutiful devotee of God, Ibrahim sought to sacrifice his only son on Allah’s wish. However, after seeing his unfaltering devotion, God intervened and asked him to sacrifice a lamb instead.

This year, the day will begin on the evening of August 21 and continue till the evening of August 22. While it holds religious significance, the celebratory process is also filled with fun. Children collect ‘Eidi’ in the form of some money and sweets from elders as blessings, and meat from the sacrificed goat is shared among families and also given to the poor. If you’re celebrating this festival with your family and friends, here are some heartwarming wishes, greetings, messages, WhatsApp status.

The festival that commemorates the readiness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in order to prove his obedience to Allah is observed by Muslims around the world, where men, women and children step out in all their finery.

This year, Eid ul-Adha would commence in India on August 21, and continue until the evening of August 22.

Here are some facts about Bakrid that you should know:

* The story of Eid al-Adha is that Prophet Abraham had a dream in which he was sacrificing his 10-years-old son, Ishmael. Abraham, a great believer in God, took his dream literally and wanted to sacrifice his son. But, according to legend, God sent his angels and asked him to sacrifice an animal instead of his son.

* On this day, Muslims around the world sacrifice an animal that is dear to them to prove their devotion and love for Allah. The feast is prepared thereafter and divided into three parts. One is for family, friends and neighbours, the second part is distributed among the poor and the needy, and the last part is retained for immediate family.

* It is believed that on the day of the Sacrificial Feast, no one should be left hungry.

* While Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah as per the Islamic lunar calendar, according to the Gregorian calendar, the date varies every year and shifts 11 days from the previous date.

* Eid al-Adha marks the final day of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage Muslims are required to undertake to Makkah once in a lifetime. Some Muslims observe this Eid for three days.

EVER since the organisers of Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) moved to the see-now-buy-now model of in-season showcasing in 2010, the Winter/Festive edition of the biannual event has been marked by bling, blitz and bridal fervour. Even as this season of LFW, which starts on Wednesday at St. Regis, Mumbai, will see Payal Singhal, Nachiket Barve and Anushree Reddy present bridal lines, SVA by Sonam and Paras Modi will swerve into pret and accessories territory. Returning to the LFW fold are Kallol Datta, Pankaj & Nidhi, and Ankur and Priyanka Modi of AM:PM.

Here’s our pick of shows to watch out for:

Male Bonding

A sponsored show and obvious “inspiration” apart, Amit Aggarwal’s show for NEXA promises to be interesting because the Delhi-based designer will present a menswear line for the first time. Known for working with non-traditional materials, new forms and structural innovation, Aggarwal’s line will use his trademark polymer details, new-age textiles and moulding techniques to challenge conventions.

Cocktail Party

One may not associate this duo with something as frivolous as a cocktail, but David Abraham and Rakesh Thakore do have the ability to surprise us. For their first solo show at LFW, Abraham & Thakore will present a collection catchily titled ‘Cocktails and Samosas’, a line of clean cut separates inspired by the Eastern tradition of wrapping and tying. The kimono, sarong and baku meet their modern reinterpretation of the salwar and churidar in an eclectic mix of geometric Banarasi weaves, hand-embroidered tussar, handcut silk and sequined pieces.

Sustain this

The Sustainable Fashion Day will highlight various textile traditions and their synergy with mainstream fashion. The #KhadiGoesChic show will see emerging labels such as Lars Andersson, Buna, The Third Floor Clothing and Jewellyn Alvares collaborate with Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) to give khadi their own sartorial spin. Karishma Shahani Khan of Ka-Sha will work with Kota Women Weavers Organisation of Rajasthan, while Rajesh Pratap Singh showcases an Indianwear collection created from Tencel yarns and fabric.

Gold Mettle

After a decade of creating sustainable fashion, Good Earth’s clothing label Sustain makes its LFW debut with ‘The Miniaturist – an immersive encounter with embellished cloth’. The garments explore the intricacy of the centuries-old craft of embellishing with gold and silver known as gota. Using the popular chand, anaar and guldaan motifs, designer Namrata Rathi and her Sustain team have resurrected fading techniques such as patua, ari and farad in the 27-piece collection, and accentuated the craft with colours derived from Mughal miniature art.

Final Call

When it comes to glamorous gowns and red-carpet dressing, no one does it better than Monisha Jaising. Lakme’s pick for this season’s grand finale show, the designer promises “lots of evening glamour, shine, attitude and colour” in her collection ‘Shades of a Diva’. The finale evening will also see Kareena Kapoor Khan play showstopper and a performance by Cirque du Soleil.

Earlier this year, the news of Anthony Bourdain’s suicide caught everyone unaware and also led to an outpouring of grief from all corners of the world. It seems like the curiosity regarding the celebrated chef remains. According to a report in Vanity Fair, CNN will air the final season of his travel and food show, Parts Unknown, that premiered in 2013.

Another documentary on Bourdain that will shed light on his life and work is also at the pre-production stage. The film is being touted as “the definitive Bourdain feature documentary,” and is expected to hit the screens in early 2019. The film will probably be showcased in festivals and will later get a theatrical release.

“As well as we knew Tony, because he did reveal himself in the series, there was still a hunger to know more about him, and to honor his work and celebrate him. The documentary format became one of the more obvious ways to go.” Amy Entelis, CNN’s executive vice president for talent and content was quoted as saying.

“We just want to make it perfect,” Entelis added. “We want to make it exquisite for Tony. We want to do him justice”.

Apparently CNN will partner with Zero Point Zero, the company that produced Parts Unknown, for the documentary and will try to shed on those facets of him that are not well known.

Bourdain, who passed away at the age of 61, had hanged himself and was found dead in a hotel room in France’s Strasbourg.

Sleep deprivation can make you more lonely, study finds

Finding it difficult to sleep is a problem faced by many. But did you know that sleep deprivation might be a reason why you feel more lonely? A study from the University of California, Berkeley as quoted in a report in The Guardian says sleep problems are related to loneliness; sleep deprivation apparently makes people more lonely.

In order to arrive at the result, 18 young adults were tested in two different scenarios after they had an interrupted sleep and after they slept soundly. Then a video clip was recorded where the degree of separation they want from another person was recorded. It was found out that when sleep deprived they kept others at a distance up to 60 percent back.

In another experiment, around 1,000 people were asked to rate photographs— that included some who were sleep deprived— to judge who appeared more socially attractive. Photos of those who did not get enough sleep ranked the lowest. It was deduced by researchers that alienation generated out of sleep-deprivation can “trigger the transmission of loneliness”

“We humans are a social species. Yet sleep deprivation can turn us into social lepers…The less sleep you get, the less you want to socially interact. In turn, other people perceive you as more socially repulsive, further increasing the grave social-isolation impact of sleep loss. That vicious cycle may be a significant contributing factor to the public health crisis that is loneliness,” says Matthew Walker, senior author of the study.

Loneliness is turning out to be a social epidemic and it is about time we deal with it head on.
